Warm, Luxurious Living Room with Historic Details Restored

The Brief

Restore the living room to a historically correct looking elegant sitting room. Last renovated in the latter half of the 1900s, the chimney was encased in a vertical stone structure, looking more appropriate for a cabin type setting. Although the house is a 1920s build with historic details, the living room didn’t fit with style of the rest of the house due to its unfortunate renovation. Additionally, the placement of the chimney in the 2nd third of the room, left a good deal of space behind it that existed not quite in the living room, but not with sufficient separation to count as another room. This issue was solved by clearly dividing the room with a doorway on either side of the newly built chimney wall to create both a living room and a smaller sunroom on the other side of the chimney wall.

the Design

Prior to decorating, the architectural details of the room were resolved.
A wall was put up around the stone fireplace column and a new fireplace surround was installed.
Recessed lighting was installed around the room and above the fireplace to illuminate the mantle.
The room was painted a sunny shade of yellow with bright white molding.
A complimentary marble-looking piece was placed as a hearth stone and smaller octagonal tiles surround the fireplace opening.
Doorways on either side of the fireplace wall divide the room and create a separate sitting area.
Adding glam to an otherwise traditional looking room, the vibrant navy rug has a gold geometric pattern to match the color of the walls and the shape of the tiles surrounding the fireplace.
A white Pottery Barn sofa contrasts with a brown leather sofa.
Faux-silk dupioni blue curtains frame the windows and soft-white sheer curtains filter the daylight.
Matching gold tone reading lights, a gold framed Frame TV, and a mix of modern original art and vintage original paintings finish the room.
