Vibrant, Romantic Bathroom on the 3rd Floor of a Historic 1920s Colonial

The Brief

Create a relaxing sanctuary 3rd floor bathroom in a historic home. Featuring an original eagle claw foot tub and a gracefully curved ceiling, the room can be so much more than a little used third floor space bathroom.

the Design

  • Chose a dramatic wall and ceiling color to give the space a luxurious feel. Painting the ceiling the same color as the walls visually enlarges the space and creates a jewel-box effect. Using a high-gloss painting technique, allows the walls and ceiling to have a mirror-like finish to reflect light during the day and especially at night.

  • Removed old radiator cover to display the unique historic radiator and painted it to match the walls to blend seamlessly.

  • Crisp white molding and a lightweight white sheer curtain keep the room bright and airy.

  • Painted the claw foot tub an elegant shade of white and added a bath accessory to hold a book or iPad, wine glass, etc., for luxurious lounging in the bath.

  • Installed a new pedestal sink to free up visual floor space, again making the room appear larger and more open.

  • Added a gold etagere shelf to add storage while keeping the airy vibe. A vase of dried hydrangeas and lavender from the house’s gardens adds a whimsical touch.

  • A modern light fixture adds a high-glam element and diffuses light beautifully around the room.

The Process

Original Bathroom

White paint and a sage green tub, the room lacked character or a wow factor.

Renovation begins…

Painting the walls a bold color with crisp white molding, and laying a new floor.
